Free Digital Money is a free and open source project that encourages innovative ideas and promotes further innovation.
While the scope of the project is limited, it strives to develop and release a Digital Money system and applications that are suitable for teaching and idea testing. Currently, the project offers version 0.2 featuring a basic digital PGP-based coin system. The next release will include a transport mechanism for sending the coins to an intended recipient and a client application known as the Wallet.
The project welcomes technical help in various forms. Application writers and visionaries are invited to use the software to test new ideas while coders can extend the current software or implement a brand new payment system. Additionally, vendors of existing digital payment schemes can implement a FDM interface to their code.
FreeDMoney also serves as an educational tool for students and others interested in discussing building secure payment systems. This includes exploring technical peer-review processes required for system security, overcoming model limitations to create a real-world payment system, addressing operational considerations, and regulatory issues in target jurisdictions. Comparing this with existing payment systems is also recommended.
The latest release of the Digital Money system includes an initial Coin implementation and a "test bank" web application. Overall, FreeDMoney is an exciting project that can spur innovation and exploration in the digital bearer money space.
