Gentium is a font family created with the aim of supporting various ethnic groups worldwide.
This software has taken great care in crafting each letter to be highly readable, visually appealing, and compact. The extended Latin letters seamlessly blend with the traditional ones, making the text aesthetically pleasing while maintaining readability. Diacritics are intentionally crafted with careful attention, ensuring they are used correctly.
Gentium offers support for modern and ancient Greek, including alternate forms. The development of this software took two years of intensive research and study by the designer at the University of Reading, England, as part of an MA program in Typeface Design.
The Gentium project is now embraced by SIL International, who plans to continue its development. Plans are in place to expand the glyph set by providing support for archaic Greek symbols, more extended Latin glyphs, and full Cyrillic script support. The work on these updates has already begun, and the results will be available shortly.
In addition, Gentium will provide Bold and Bold Italic faces for its users. The software is openly available for download and use by anyone, at no cost. Gentium is distributed under the SIL Open Font License, a free and open-source license that allows for modification and redistribution.
Gentium is envisioned to not only stimulate literature production but also promote greater parity with the basic Latin alphabet. This software also aims to encourage other type designers to appreciate and support the beauty of the extended Latin alphabet.
