glHack is a software that leverages hardware acceleration via OpenGL to render 2D tile graphics in the NetHack game. It is a port of the original game and provides an improved gaming experience.
The most recent release of glHack (version 1.2.3) includes a port to NetHack 3.4.3 and the inclusion of the TAB key as an additional option for toggling between tile and text views.
In terms of its system requirements, glHack has only been tested under Linux (specifically, Debian and Mandrake) but should work with other Linux distributions. However, for other UNIX operating systems, some adjustments may have to be made to the makefiles and config files. It's also important to note that glHack does not have support for Windows or Mac systems.
For OpenGL support, glHack requires 3D hardware acceleration and preferably a hardware-accelerated 3D card. Voodoo 3 and NVidia TNT64 cards have been tested so far, but the Mesa library is also a viable option. It's possible to compile glHack with only software rendering support, so OpenGL is no longer a strict requirement. Lastly, LibSDL (version 1.2 or higher) and LibPNG are also required for loading the graphic files.
