Essential GNOME desktop icons included in one package.
To begin the installation process, start by navigating to the directory containing the package's source code. From there, you can type in `./configure` to configure the package to your system. If you are using `csh` on an old version of System V, you may need to type `sh ./configure` to prevent `csh` from trying to execute `configure` itself.
Once you have started the configuration process, the software will take a while to run. While running, the program prints messages that tell you which features it is checking for. After the configuration is complete, type in `make` to compile the package.
If the package comes with any self-tests, you can run them by typing in `make check`. Once the compilation process is complete, you can install the software and any data files and documentation by typing in `make install`.
If you want to remove the program binaries and object files from the source code directory once you have installed the package, type in `make clean`. To remove the files that `configure` created (so you can compile the package for a different kind of computer), type in `make distclean`.
There is also a `make maintainer-clean` target, but that is intended mainly for the package's developers. If you don't know what it does, avoid using it. Overall, the Gnome Icon Theme package is an excellent tool to improve the aesthetic appeal of your GNOME desktop.
