GNU xhippo is a Unix playlist manager suitable for many sound players. It is a flexible and powerful program designed to make managing playlists easy and customizable.
The program is designed to automatically determine which player to use based on the file extension, with default settings being specified in a configuration file. It uses textual playlist files that can be easily created using "find" or "locate" system utilities. These playlist files are compatible with most other Unix sound players.
xhippo's interface is inspired by the popular "HippoPlayer" player for the Amiga, providing a familiar and intuitive user experience. It was developed under Debian GNU/Linux and is compatible with other Unix-like systems where gcc, glib, getopt_long, and GTK are available. Standard "ports" are available for NetBSD and FreeBSD as well.
The software offers various integration options, including integration with the GNOME desktop, supporting GNOME themes and allowing drag-and-drop functionality. It also supports specific GTK themes through its own gtkrc. Additionally, xhippo can read ID3 tags from MP3 files and incorporates randomization features, ensuring that users won't hear the same song repeatedly.
xhippo is highly customizable at both compile-time and runtime and offers German and English language interfaces. Please note that xhippo comes with no warranty, beyond what is permitted by law, and the software can be distributed freely under the terms of the GNU General Public License.
