Gpac is a multimedia technology platform that supports MPEG-4, VRML, X3D, and more, providing developers with a powerful toolset for creating rich, high-quality multimedia experiences.
Secondly, the software is written in ANSI C to ensure portability to a range of platforms, including embedded platforms and DSPs. Keeping the memory footprint as low as possible is a critical goal of the software. Additionally, the development team aims to achieve the integration of recent multimedia standards such as SVG/SMIL, VRML, X3D, SWF, etc., into a single framework. They have already initiated the process of achieving this stage with VRML97 support.
Currently, GPAC has a lot to offer. The software features 2D and 3D multimedia playback, MPEG-4 Systems encoders/multiplexers, and publishing tools for content distribution. The software is licensed under the GNU General Public License. The current release of GPAC (0.2.3) already covers a vast part of the standard, and it provides the most advanced and robust 2D MPEG-4 Player available worldwide. Additionally, it comes with a decent 3D MPEG-4/VRML player that includes X3D support.
GPAC runs seamlessly on Windows and Linux platforms, and although the WindowsCE/PocketPC platform is no longer in active maintenance, GPAC 0.2.3 runs smoothly on an iPaq device.
