Gtkedit is a software based on GTK+ and is an alternative to notepad. It offers similar features and functionalities as notepad for users.
This editor contains almost all features of Windows 2000's Notepad - with the only exceptions being printing and help. The C source code is a single file of around 1,400 lines, with no need for a configure script, nor a makefile.
Gtkedit1 is perfect for those who need a basic GUI editor in Unix. It was developed through a personal necessity: the lack of a decent GUI editor for a particular machine. The developer couldn't find an editor that wasn't too slow, bloated, or ugly. While there was an option called gnotepad+, it still took too long to load (around 2 seconds).
Thus, gtkedit began as an attempt to solve this issue. The editor mostly focuses on basic editing features such as cut, copy, paste, and primitive undo/redo functionalities inspired by Notepad. Usage of gtkedit is straightforward, and the basic common shortcut keys are much like Notepad.
Additional features include finding and replacing text, as well as quickly going to any particular line. Users can also change the font used for text display or toggle the wrapping of long lines. However, these settings are lost when the program closes.
All in all, Gtkedit1 requires a GTK+ version of 1.2.x, and the latest update introduced a GNU gettext for internationalization. Additionally, a buffer overflow issue was fixed in the URI parsing code. Users can find a stable and efficient GUI editor in Gtkedit1 without wasting too much system memory.
