Gwenview is an efficient and user-friendly image viewer and browser designed for the KDE desktop environment. It allows you to view images quickly and easily.
One of the best things about this software is that it comes with image and directory KParts components for use in Konqueror. It also provides additional features such as image renaming, comparing, converting, batch processing, HTML gallery, and others through the KIPI image framework.
The software allows you to load and save all image formats supported by KDE, and browse GIMP files (*.xcf) thanks to the included QXCFI component developed by Lignum Computing. You can control the way images are scaled, lock the zoom factor to keep the same zoom between images, and even show image properties and image-specific meta-information like Konqueror does.
Gwenview also enables you to perform simple image manipulations like rotation and mirroring. You can start any external tools from Gwenview for more complex image manipulations, and define your selection of tools to fit your needs.
When it comes to browsing your collection of images, this software offers full support for KIO slaves, allowing you to browse FTP/Windows shares, go into tar balls or zip files, and so on. You can choose to use a detailed file view or the thumbnail view, and even use keyboard browsing to go from one image to another without loading all the images between them.
In terms of presenting your images, Gwenview features a fullscreen with optional overlayed image file and a simple built-in slideshow to allow you to present images the way you want them to show. The software also has a folder tree window and a file list window to provide easy navigation among your thousand images.
Finally, it is worth noting that the latest version of Gwenview needs KDE 3.1. The 1.0.x series needs the JPEGTran program to perform lossless rotations, which you can get from the libjpeg library. The 1.1.x series do not need it anymore. This latest release also comes with a few bug fixes and new features such as settings in the dialog to edit the thumbnail view details being directly applied and OSD being able to display more image information.
