For those who may not know, GNOME is an international project aiming to create a complete desktop environment that is built entirely on free software. This includes software development frameworks, selecting application software for the desktop, and developing management programs for tasks like file handling and window management. GNOME is a part of the GNU Project and can be used on various Unix-like systems, the most notable being Linux. GNOME also integrates seamlessly with the Java Desktop System in Solaris.
Originally, the name GNOME stood for GNU Network Object Model Environment, though this acronym is no longer used. The GNOME project focuses on simplicity, usability, and making things work without issues. These principles can be seen in the Humanity icon theme, which is a beautiful addition to the GNOME desktop environment.
