inline_smtp is a Perl script that enables filtering of incoming emails.
One of the great things about inline_smtp is that it filters while redirecting, which means that mail arrives almost instantly. The software accepts incoming connections and relays the conversation to the maildrop host in real-time, allowing it to be processed quickly. This also means that any 550 messages are passed through immediately, without the need for processing a bounce.
Inline_smtp is capable of filtering on rctp to: addresses as well as processing the mail body using a filter, which makes it incredibly versatile. It even understands enough of the smtp protocol to filter effectively.
To use this software, you'll need to have the Net::Server perl module installed. But once you have it up and running, you'll quickly see just how effective it can be. And with the latest release, the "received from" header injection has been moved to happen after passing through the filter to prevent changes from spamc.
