The Intltool is a toolset used to extract translatable strings and subsequently merging translations, making it an indispensable software for internationalization and localization.
One of the key features of the Intltool package is the script, intltoolize. This script does the necessary magic to your module by copying the various scripts and ensuring a smooth experience for building from tarballs or from CVS.
For those using the autoconf/automake configuration, the following steps are recommended to use the Intltool package in your module:
- Install Intltool and make sure the macro it installs is in aclocal's path
- Add the recommended lines to autogen.sh after the call to gettextize
- Add intltool-extract.in, intltool-merge.in, and intltool-update.in to EXTRA_DIST in your top-level Makefile.am and also to the top-level .cvsignore
- Add intltool-extract, intltool-merge, and intltool-update to DISTCLEANFILES in your top-level Makefile.am
- Remove the po/desk.pl and po/update.* scripts, as intltool-update will take over their functionality.
Overall, the Intltool collection is a useful tool for software translation and is utilized by various packages listed in the USED file.
