The IPS-QoS software serves as a flexible firewall while providing traffic shaping capabilities. It offers a versatile solution for network administrators to control network traffic and optimize network performance.
This software is designed to give users more control over their internet connection and can be used as a router, enhancing servers or complex PC-based routers. The ips-qos package has two main functions, the firewall, and traffic shaping tool. The firewall provides easy-to-use flexible configurations for controlling access to the internet (or selected services) from a LAN, while the traffic shaping tool measures and controls the traffic load for every computer (or class of computers and services) in a LAN.
The ips-qos package supports most types of internet connections, such as ADSL, DSL, and Frame Relay/ATM, and enables users to redirect ports to servers in LAN (DNAT). Additionally, it allows users to enable/disable IP and/or MAC addresses, block ports, and IP addresses, store information about sent/received packets, and register traffic load of every computer/class. The software also provides static or dynamic traffic shaping based on CBQ or HTB, "live" traffic tracing, and reporting load and transfer pending and past.
Users can administer ips-qos via an internet browser such as IE or Firefox, and it requires minimal system requirements, including a PC computer with a Pentium processor, 64MB RAM, and 2GB HDD or recommended PC computer with a Pentium II processor, 128MB RAM, and 4GB HDD. Ips-qos is based on typical packages included in all distributions with no need to compile special kernels or tools.
The software offers a 14-day trial period and comes with many new features in the latest release, including on-line updates, router/server classes based on IMQ, bridge mode, support for up to 590 computers/classes, an ipp2p extension, and compatibility with Debian 4.0 and Fedora Core 8. Overall, ips-qos is a cost-effective and efficient solution for administering shared internet connections for firms, offices, or homes.
