With iSwitchWin software, users can quickly navigate between windows on their workspaces by typing a portion of the caption of the desired window. This simplifies the process of switching between multiple windows, saving users time and increasing efficiency.
Inspired by iswitch-window.jl, originally written by Topi Paavola for Sawfish window manager, iswitchwin has been designed to work primarily with Metacity and Gnome environment, using libwnck to control your window manager. However, it should work with any EWHM compatible window manager.
Installing iswitchwin is a breeze, assuming you have a good Linux distribution with the necessary dependencies. You can compile it with ease, following the simple steps of running "./configure," "make," and "sudo make install." The compilation currently requires the following two libraries and their headers - libglade2 and libwnck.
Using iswitchwin is just as simple. Just make it easily accessible by setting a hotkey that suits you. The setup will depend on the window manager you're using, but the commands to set iswitchwin to be run on the F12 keystroke under Metacity are as follows - "gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/run_command_1 --type string F12" and "gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/keybinding_commands/command_1 --type string iswitchwin." These commands can be adapted to suit your needs if you're using custom Metacity commands.
Once you've set up iswitchwin, starting it is a breeze using the hotkey or simply running the iswitchwin command. The software will display a list of all windows on all workspaces, allowing you to choose the one you require, either by using the arrow keys or mouse or typing in the window's title to search for it.
This latest release fixes makefiles making it easier to compile cleanly on Ubuntu Feisty. Overall, iswitchwin is an excellent tool for anyone who finds themselves constantly switching between windows while working, making it a must-have software in your collection.
