A text-based maze game that is derived from an old DOS game, made for Linux operating system.
The game boasts a whopping 26 "option levels" that allow the user to modify game characteristics such as whether or not diagonal shots will ricochet off the walls. There are also ten levels of difficulty, which can help players build their skills gradually over time.
The game can be played in the text-mode console, or via an xterm connection or telnet connection. However, this restricts players to pressing one key at a time, meaning they can't move and fire at the same time, nor can they move or fire diagonally.
The latest release of Linux Snipes includes native X support, although it can be slow at times. Unfortunately, the current version of the game does not include network/multiplayer support, although this may be added in future updates.
One notable fix in the latest release is that keyboard mapping in raw keyboard mode is now determined by calling dumpkeys(1), fixing Debian bug #37662. However, it's worth noting that this may not work optimally with Dvorak key mappings. Additionally, the fix requires dumpkeys(1), which should be provided with most Linux distributions. Finally, this feature was only tested on the intel machine of the developer.
Overall, Linux Snipes is a fun and challenging game that stays true to its roots while also offering new options and features to keep players engaged.
