LinuxSpeaks is a set of Perl modules and scripts that act as user interfaces for numerous audio command line applications.
Although the scripts are essentially front-end applications for pre-existing command line applications, they are still incredibly useful in their own right. Additionally, LinuxSpeaks makes it easy to configure for espeak, festival, and cepstral. You can even set it up for other text-to-speech engines relatively painlessly.
One of the standout features of LinuxSpeaks is Speaktcledit, a text editor that runs in the Linux console. The editor comes equipped with a plethora of useful tools, such as spell check, the ability to print files to a printer, and cut/copy/paste functionality. Speaktcledit is built on top of tcledit.tcl, a console text editor written in pure TCL by Steve Redler IV and Adly Abdullah. The editor also uses the festcl package, which was written by Tom Poindexter for festival server text-to-speech functions.
Overall, if you're a fan of Linux and are looking for an interface that is both accessible and feature-rich, then LinuxSpeaks and its associated scripts are well worth checking out!
