LXPanel is a lightweight X11 desktop panel that relies on fbpanel, offering users an efficient and customizable way to manage applications and windows on their desktop.
The task bar of LXPanel is also very useful, especially with its urgency hint that can flash when you get new incoming messages. It also has a notification area that functions as a system tray. Furthermore, an excellent digital clock is available which is very accurate.
LXPanel also has a unique run dialog which lets you type a command and run it. This can be called in external programs. Additionally, there is a net status icon plug-in that is optional and ported from gnome-netstatus-applet. Another optional feature is the volume control plug-in which is written by jserv.
LXPanelctl is an external controller that enables you to control LXPanel in other programs. This feature is really useful in key bindings provided by window managers. Examples are “lxpanelctl run” which will show the run dialog in LXPanel and “lxpanelctl menu” which will help you to show the application menu.
LXPanel was originally written by Anatoly Asviyan based on fbpanel. ./configure --help can be used to see available options (default options are quite okay though). For better understanding of the configuration, you can take a look at /usr/share/lxpanel/default. Additionally, the config file of LXPanel is different from fbpanel’s.
The software requires GTK+ >= 2.6.x. This version has minor bug fixes which make it better and more efficient to use. In summary, LXPanel is a great software that is easy to use and has many useful features.
