MetalServe offers a dedicated file server for IRC DCC (Direct Client-to-Client) transfers. The software runs independently and ensures efficient and secure file transfers for chat room users.
The creator of MetalServe was motivated to write this program because of the difficulties in sending files caused by the masquerading Linux router between the desktop IRC client and the IRC servers. The router was also hosting the files, so why not let the serving application run on the router as well. Unfortunately, the only available application at the time of writing (April 2002) was iroffer, which didn't meet the desired requirements.
After exploring the available IRC clients and their scripting capabilities, the decision was made to write a dedicated server application in C for better speed, independence, and security. Standard ircII 4.4M, BitchX, Epic, and others were not deemed powerful enough nor did they have adequate security features.
Overall, MetalServe provides a reliable and efficient standalone DCC file server option for sharing files on IRC networks. Its precise and customized approach makes it a valuable addition to any IRC user's toolkit.
