mezoGIS is a GIS software that provides a user-friendly interface to examine and analyze spatial data with ease.
The main goal of mezoGIS is to provide a tool for geospatial analysis with PostGIS. This can be done through on-the-fly SQL queries as well as through larger external plugin scripts. While other open-source applications, such as QGIS or GRASS, can display PostGIS data sets, they require properly indexed tables as an input and do not provide built-in functionality to launch SQL queries.
MezoGIS, however, stays close to the SQL workflow. It launches spatial queries through manually entered SQL commands and displays result sets containing geometry as map layers. The very first public release of mezoGIS was in March 2006.
MezoGIS is completely written in Python programming language for GTK+. It works fine on the GNOME Desktop on Linux and has yet to be tested on other desktops or platforms.
Key features of mezoGIS include fast SQL queries, the ability to view any kind of result, map creation, plugin engine, and XML file format. Once SQL commands and queries are entered, they can be sent to PostGIS within mezoGIS. Common SQL tasks and commands are accessible via context menus. Result tables from SQL queries with geometric data are displayed directly in the map. This feature is very useful for on-the-fly geoanalysis.
Result sets can also be overlaid and layouted to create elaborate maps. The display engine currently supports rough support for transparent colors, line styles, and symbols. Plugin scripts written in Python can be loaded and executed. However, the API is only a rudimentary implementation and is subject to change. Project files are saved into an XML file format, and data itself is not stored but must be reloaded from the database after loading.
To use mezoGIS, users will need GTK+ version 2.6.x, Python 2.4, PyGTK 2.8, Pycairo 1.0.0, and the psycopg and GeoTypes Python modules. Users can refer to the homepage for more information on where to get those modules.
The latest release of mezoGIS is still unstable but now includes raw labeling, graduated colors, and a general GUI upgrade.
