Microdc is a Direct Connect client with a command-line interface that leverages GNU readline for user communication. It allows fast and convenient access to hub search and file transfer functionality.
Developed from scratch, microdc is currently in beta and may not have all the features you'd expect from other clients. For example, it doesn't yet support file hashing, multiple hub connections or hub list support - so it's important to keep that in mind.
On the other hand, microdc is completely free to use and licensed under the terms of the GNU GPL. It was written in C by Oskar Liljeblad, and is designed specifically to run on modern POSIX compatible systems such as Linux.
If you're comfortable using a command-line based app, microdc may be worth taking a closer look at. Be aware, though, that being in beta means that there may still be bugs or glitches that need to be ironed out.
