The Greek Linux Operating System is a software platform designed to run on various hardware devices. It is a customizable, secure, and lightweight system that offers users a range of features and tools for productivity, communication, and entertainment.
The Monomaxos Live DVD was initially designed for amateur Greek users as a "demonstration" of the capabilities of Linux and open source software. Due to its success and an increasing demand outside Greece, an English edition of Monomaxos is now available for international users. Monomaxos is the Greek word for "Gladiator."
The operating system includes a large number of pre-installed software packages and drivers that enable users to play multimedia of any kind (sound/video/internet streaming/HD video playback) using VLC Media Player. Monomaxos can even function as a stand-alone media center because it has an embedded XBMC media center.
For office use, Monomaxos provides OpenOffice suite (ver. 3.01), AbiWord, and two web browsers – Firefox 3.09 and Opera 9.6 – optimized for perfect use (download manager/flash support/youtube videos download with just one click/HD video is also supported). Users also have access to Google Earth (ver.5) and Google Picasa (ver.3).
Monomaxos features Gnomenu software instead of the classic Gnome main menu, and a range of software options for ripping and burning CD/DVDs, making AVIs and mp3s, editing sound and images with Audacity and Gimp. Every possible internet communication option is also available, including Skype, MSN, and VOIP.
Monomaxos makes downloading any kind of internet content easy, whether it's through torrent, peer2peer, or live links. The system comes with JDOWNLOADER, so users can even download .ccf files. MAME games are fully functional and come with 550 selected games.
The system is optimized to support compiz desktop effects and read-write of NTFS hard disks right out of the box. There are also many system tools like antivirus software with updates using the internet and tools for system maintenance.
To run Monomaxos, users need a 2Ghz X86 Processor, 512 MB of system memory (RAM), 5 GB of disk space or 4 GB USB Flash, and a graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution with at least 64 MB. Sound card and network/Internet connection are also required.
For Spanish and Greek speaking users, there are Monomaxos editions that provide information and download methods in Spanish and Greek, respectively. The credentials to access the system as a root user are "user" and "root," respectively.
Overall, Monomaxos is a well-developed operating system with a wide range of supported devices, multimedia formats, software options, and internet content downloading capabilities.
