GNOME is an international effort to build a complete desktop environment, which is a graphical user interface sitting on top of an operating system. The GNOME project is part of the GNU Project and can be used with various Unix-like operating systems, and is even part of Java Desktop System in Solaris. GNOME puts a lot of emphasis on simplicity, usability, and making things "just work."
