Netacct-mysql is a traffic accounting daemon that collects data and stores it in MySQL. It is a modified version of the original net-acct software.
One of the standout features of Netacct-mysql is its ability to write accounting information in a single line in MySQL per day for every IP address (in the mrta style). This makes it easy to analyse your data and get a clear understanding of where your traffic is coming from.
The application functions in a similar way to a sniffer, tracking all traffic passing through network interfaces assigned by the configuration file. Data is stored in memory and periodically saved in the database (default save period is 300 seconds).
Designed for accounting network traffic passed through your router/gateway, Netacct-mysql uses the libpcap library and functions as a userspace daemon. You can easily divide your network traffic into four different categories: international, peering, direct and local. All the traffic accounts of each category are then saved in the database, currently supporting MySQL and Oracle.
The Netacct-mysql application currently runs on several operating systems, including Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and Solaris. However, for more specific information about a particular operating system, you can always check the FAQ file.
This latest release of Netacct-mysql includes several bug fixes, such as fixing the 'disable' fields in the config file, so it no longer writes some fields in the dump file. So, if you're in need of a reliable traffic accounting daemon, Netacct-mysql is definitely worth checking out.
