NeWBIE LiveCD is a desktop-focused NetBSD based distribution aimed at delivering a user-friendly operating system.
This live CD is quite similar to another well-known system, FreeSBIE. However, its unique features cater specifically to desktop-users. Additionally, it serves as a core for creating a NetBSD version of Arudius, a network security auditing tool.
The reason behind its being based on NetBSD is due to the erroneous belief that NetBSD is just an obscure *BSD flavor that is only suitable for small devices like toasters. In actuality, it is a powerful, flexible, and highly portable operating system. In many ways, it even surpasses its more famous cousins.
One of the most remarkable things about NetBSD is that it recently broke the speed record for network data transfer. Its speed and scalability are also impressive. As a result, the NeWBIE LiveCD is a remarkable blend of high-performance software and accessibility.
The latest release is an improvement on the previous versions. It has a more streamlined boot process and includes a GUI tool that simplifies the setup of the modem/DSL connection. Also, more productivity tools like a file manager, spreadsheet, Samba, wireless AP detection, sniffer, network analysis, etc. are now included.
