Nexenta is an open source operating system that utilizes the OpenSolaris kernel and runtime, offering a fully comprehensive GNU-based platform for software development.
Developing Nexenta was a laborious task, but the creators enjoyed every moment. The system is completely open source and free without any charge, and it includes all the necessary packages to run software like Apache, MySQL, Perl/Python/PHP, Firefox, Evolution, software update manager, Synaptic package manager, Gaim Instant Messenger, abiword, administration & development utilities, editors, graphics, GNOME, interpreters, and libraries. All of these packages are running on the advanced SunOS kernel.
There is a massive and ever-changing pool of code and hardware, which includes the kernel, network services, databases, utilities, and user applications. Nexenta distributes over 2,300 software packages that can be easily installed, run, and upgraded. Nexenta's software packages originated from Ubuntu (Breezy) Linux, which has more than 16,000+ software packages. Making all of them available for use on Nexenta's environment is one of their objectives.
Nexenta is available to run on 32-bit and 64-bit x86/x64 platforms. Their web portal, along with the entire development environment (including Bugs and HackZone), is powered by Nexenta—a sign of its relative maturity and confidence booster. Nexenta is taking its first steps in the big world, and they need help to create the best operating environment. The public can test Nexenta on their devices, enhance the web portal and software, translate Nexenta languages and add new applications. This will aid in defining a set of software for future releases.
The LiveCD contains a fully-fledged Nexenta OS with select applications on a single CD with network and GNOME environment, supporting both 32- and 64-bit x86/x64 platforms. The image can also be burned into a bootable CD-R/CD-RW or booted in VMWare or QEMU environments.
