NSS-LDAPD is a project that has branched off from the nss_ldap package created by PADL Software Pty Ltd. It is an updated version of the nss_ldap library which provides Name Service Switch functionality for LDAP accounts.
The nss-ldapd implementation has several advantages. For one, it offers a lighter NSS library and a simpler internal semantics. Furthermore, there is a clear separation between NSS and LDAP code, and the server part can easily be implemented in another language. Another significant advantage is that the implementation requires fewer connections to the LDAP server.
Additionally, nss-ldapd has undergone a major code overhaul resulting in simplifications and the removal of old compatibility code. Compatibility will be re-added with later releases of nss-ldapd for those platforms that require it.
Overall, the nss-ldapd project presents promising improvements over its predecessor and offers a viable option for users in need of a more functional and streamlined solution.
