KDE software optimizes file compression for various file formats.
The optimise_zip.desktop menu includes support for several file formats, including OpenOffice.org/StarOffice documents and templates (.sx?, .st?), OASIS OpenDocument (.od?, .ot?), Java archive (.jar), and Mozilla extensions (.xpi), among others. The optimise_gzip.desktop menu covers a wide range of formats, including AbiWord documents (.abw.gz, .zabw), DVI (.dvi.gz), PostScript (.ps.gz), bitmap fonts (.bdf.gz, .pcf.gz, .snf.gz), Tar (.tar.gz, .tgz), SVG (.svgz), and VRML (.wrl.gz).
To use this service, AdvanceCOMP [] must be installed as an additional tool. For PNG files, OptiPNG [] can also be used to optimise them. It is recommended to run OptiPNG followed by AdvanceCOMP for most PNG files, and users can expect varying results depending on the file optimised.
As these compression processes are CPU-intensive, users with slower systems or those working on optimising a large number of files may want to choose the "default" over the "maximum" optimisation option. The service runs in the background, so users can continue multitasking.
In some cases, the AdvanceCOMP tools may return a CRC error and refuse to optimise the file. This does not cause damage to the file.
To install, copy the .desktop files to ~/.kde4/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/. The service menus have been tested on KDE 4.1 and should work on earlier versions that support service menus.
Overall, Optimise Compression can be a valuable tool for users looking to optimise their files and improve website load times.
