Potracegui is a graphical user interface that serves as a front-end to the software programs Potrace and Autotrace. The programs are designed for creating vector graphics from bitmapped images.
Potrace and autotrace are fantastic apps for tracing images, enabling them to be scaled, rotated, and transformed without losing quality. While command-line programs are typically preferred, using a GUI for image work is often more comfortable. Potracegui, thanks to Jakub Stachowski, can now load remote files (web, ftp...) and support drag and drop, while utilizing any image format recognized by KDE (whereas potrace only uses a few bitmapped formats).
In terms of installation, Potracegui follows the usual process: ./configure, make, su, make install. For SuSE with KDE 3.1 or 3.2, the directory for KDE must be specified in the configuration step using --prefix=/opt/kde3. Mandrake 9.2 with KDE3.2 users may face additional issues if using NVIDIA drivers. Specifically, Potracegui expects to find the library /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.la, but in this distribution, that library is installed in /usr/lib/libGL.la. To fix this issue, symlink the library by navigating to /usr/X11R6/lib and running: ln -s /usr/lib/libGL.la .
The most recent update included a quick bugfix, deleting the debug() method from options.cpp. Overall, Potracegui serves as a useful interface for two strong tracing programs, making image work smoother and more efficient.
