PowerTop software identifies the highest power-consuming Linux applications and kernel settings, allowing users to conserve battery time.
Intel has developed PowerTop as a first step towards reducing power usage for Intel-based computers running Linux. This tool helps you identify which software is using the most power, so you can fix or close these applications and immediately see the resulting power savings. If you're using a laptop, PowerTop will even estimate the remaining battery life.
The PowerTop website also provides tips and tricks for reducing power usage, and invites users to join their mailing list to participate in efforts to get Linux to use less power. To build and run the program, simply type make, and then run the program with ./powertop.
In the latest release, PowerTop has added support for some new features: On newer CPUs and Linux kernel 2.6.25 or later, PowerTop can report which C-states the CPU and BIOS support. It has added support for reading C-state information via sysfs, power supply class via sysfs, and the "P" key to show process IDs when possible. Additionally, PowerTop now shows USB suspend statistics as a low priority hint for busy devices and general USB suspend statistics in dump mode.
If you're looking for a powerful, easy-to-use tool to help you manage power usage on your Linux machine, PowerTop is definitely worth checking out.
