Preview-Latex is a software tool that offers inline previews for various content within LaTeX buffers in Emacs.
WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) can be polarizing for some users. The pertinent question isn't whether we want it or not, but what we expect from it. Though printer fonts work well for fine-tuning layout, they are not ideal for on-screen text editing. Computer screens render most printer fonts unappealing as they lack contrast and are low resolution. Additionally, the margins and pagination of print are not required on screen. However, more complex visual compositions, such as math formulas and tables, cannot be comprehended easily when seen only in the source.
preview-latex strikes a balance between WYSIWYG and traditional LaTeX. It only uses graphical renditions of the output for specific, configurable constructs. Then, it does so only when you indicate it in the source code. Switching between the source and preview is easy and natural and can be done for each image you want to preview. It employs a sophisticated framework of other programs, such as dvipng, Dvips, and GhostScript, behind the scenes to extract the material of interest in the background and provide fast interactive response, all thanks to the specialized LaTeX style file.
