The QAParadigm app simplifies the display of sentences for a standard QAP experiment.
The fascinating aspect of QAP investigations is how tiny changes that do not alter the syntax of the sentence, such as verb choice or intonation, can affect the interpretation of a dialogue. In a typical QAP study, one presents a textual statement to a test subject and then verbally asks a question to detect any differences in interpretation.
The QAParadigm program assists in carrying out such experiments by simplifying organization and execution. It reads questions from a plain text file, can automatically randomize question-answer pairs, synchronizes displayed sentences with audio question files, logs the sequence in which question-answer pairs were presented, and associates personal subject data with the logged information. The program accommodates both single-screen and multiple-screen modes.
Experiment descriptors are written in simple Unicode-encoded text files, allowing any writing system to display as long as the supporting fonts are installed on the system. The program has been tested and used in actual linguistics research projects.
