This software is a scalable module for scanning shared files using Samba for virus detection. It provides robust protection from malware and supports flexible scaling to meet the needs of growing networks.
The software consists of two parts – a samba vfs module and one or more daemons. The daemon is responsible for scanning files and creating a duplicate file with a .scanned: prefix if the original file is clean. The samba module, on the other hand, simply checks if such a file exists and if it's newer than the original file. If it is, the file is shown to the user, but if it's not, the file is not returned in any directory listing and cannot be opened. The samba vfs module also alerts the daemon to scan the file.
At first, the directory appears to be empty, but after a refresh, all files are shown. The utility scannedonly_prescan can help in prescanning all directories. If a virus is detected by the daemon, a file with a warning message is created in the user's directory, the logs are alerted, and the file is renamed with a .virus: prefix. Files with the .virus: prefix are inaccessible and never displayed to the user.
Overall, Scannedonly is a highly efficient and scalable anti-virus software that's a great alternative to samba-vscan, offering a smoother user experience and an excellent virus detection mechanism.
