Simple Multi User Out-Of-Office-Responder is software that automatically responds to vacation emails. It is designed for multiple users and provides a simple solution for informing clients or colleagues about being out of the office.
All users are local and have mail delivered via procmail to their mailboxes. They can access their email through POP3, IMAP, or squirrel-mail webmail. This is a standard, simple set up that works well except for one important feature - an out of office responder.
The standard and simple set up would be to use the vacation program. However, this was not suitable. The users don't have shell access to the server for security reasons. Even if they did have access, they wouldn't be able or willing to use SSH to log onto the server or use vi to edit the message. The team needed to come up with something more user friendly.
The idea was to have a system that would plug in easily to the existing infrastructure of local users, Postfix, and procmail while being user friendly. The team evaluated a couple of existing options, including phamm and gnarl. However, they found that these options were too complex.
Phamm stored users in LDAP and used postfix virtual domains to deliver email to another component. This completely replaced procmail. Gnarwl also used LDAP but delivered email to local mailboxes with procmail. Unfortunately, the team experienced issues with Gnarwl and could not get it to work, even after debugging and looking at the source code.
In this new release, the software has added an IMP plugin to make it even more user-friendly. This software is perfect for anyone who wants an easy to use vacation responder that can be plugged into existing systems. It's simple, secure, and easy to use.
