Snmppd is a proxy daemon for SNMP that is specifically meant to be used with Nagios, allowing for efficient network monitoring and management.
Snmppd listens for requests in the form of [KEEPALIVE]
The installation process is quite straightforward. The `configure' shell script sets up the correct values for system-dependent variables used during compilation, and creates a `Makefile' in each directory of the software package. If necessary, it can also produce `.h' files containing system-dependent definitions. Once finished, a shell script called `config.status' is created to be run in the future to recreate the configuration, along with a `config.cache' file that saves the test results for quicker reconfiguring.
If there are any unusual requirements necessary for compiling the package, try to figure out how the `configure' script could check for them and send any diffs or instructions to the address given in the `README' so that they can be considered for future updates. Additionally, if `config.cache' contains results you don't want to keep, it can be removed or edited. The `configure.in' file is used to create `configure' by a program called `autoconf'. It is only necessary if you want to change it or regenerate `configure' using a newer version of `autoconf'.
To compile the package, simply `cd' to the directory containing the package's source code and type `./configure' to configure it for your system. It may take some time for the configuration to complete, but it prints messages with the features it is checking for while running. After it's done, type `make' to compile the package, `make check' to run any included self-tests, and `make install' to install the programs, along with any necessary data files or documentation. There is also a `make clean' option for removing program binaries and object files from the source code directory. To remove the files created during `configure', including the `config.cache' file, type `make distclean'.
