The SoundCard Plugin is an XMMS input plugin that allows users to directly read audio data from their soundcard.
The SoundCard Plugin, in combination with the FIR filter plugin, enables real-time processing of audio data using long FIR filters without the need for expensive DSP hardware. The software has few requirements and is very easy to use. All you need is XMMS, and you're good to go.
Using the SoundCard Plugin is a breeze. To get started, open the preferences in xmms (CRTL-P), select the Input Plugins tab, and enable the plugin. Then, open the "Play Location" (CTRL-L) dialog and enter soundcard://< path-to-your-sound-device >, which typically is /dev/dsp, that is soundcard:///dev/dsp. Note the three slashes (///)! When you do this, the time should start running, and the song title should say "1. SOUNDCARD: /DEV/DSP".
Once set up, you can plug in any audio source to your line/SPDIF/mic input and watch the bars in the spectrum analyzer start moving. However, note that the software has not been heavily tested, and it only works on a limited number of systems. As of the time of writing, the sampling rate is locked at 44.1 kHz.
Overall, the SoundCard Plugin is an excellent software that enables audio data processing through XMMS. Although it has few limitations, it is a great option for users looking to experiment with audio processing without having to invest in expensive DSP hardware.
