Java Servlet and JSP Platform provides a framework for developing web-based applications using the Java programming language. Servlets enable the handling of HTTP requests and responses, while JSPs provide a way to create dynamic web pages. Together they offer a robust, scalable solution for building modern web applications.
In this appliance, Tomcat is configured as a standalone application server without requiring an external web server. However, if you need a fully-featured web server, a Tomcat on Apache Appliance is also available. The TurnKey Tomcat Live CD appliance comes with all the standard features present in TurnKey Core.
Some of the features of this appliance include SSL support, out of the box. Additionally, Postfix MTA is also bound explicitly to localhost to allow sending of emails from the web applications like password recoveries.
Moreover, Tomcat and Java configurations are also made. Admin and manager roles along with the admin user is setup, and the HTTP connector is bound to port 80 (default: 8180). SSL port, configured to bind to port 443 (default: 8443), while AJP connector on port 8009 is disabled for security reasons. Overall, Tomcat and Java environment variables are configured system-wide.
The default username for Webmin and SSH is root, and there is no password set for it – the user needs to set it up during installation. However, for Tomcat administration applications, the default user is admin with the password set to turnkey, giving users easy access to Tomcat configuration and management.
