VaryOnApplet is a process-control applet designed for the Gnome environment that utilizes pushbutton functionality for ease-of-use.
At first, VaryOnApplet will appear as a red "X" Checkbox. To make it work, you need to set the preferences by right-clicking on it and selecting "Preferences." Here, you can set the Applet Title, Start and Stop commands, Lock File, Check, and Process Name.
When you left-click on VaryOnApplet, it will act as a toggle to vary the process on and off. It won't attempt to bring down any process if it doesn't believe the process is running.
To find the Process Name, you can cat out the contents of the Lock File, and if it is a process ID number (PID), you can print the name of the process that owns it. In VaryOnApplet's preferences, set the Process Name to the Lock File owner.
VaryOnApplet is a general-purpose toggle that doesn't require any specific content in the lock file. It doesn't demand any particular relationship between the presence of the lock file, Start and Stop commands, or any Start/Stop commands, for that matter.
To run VaryOnApplet, you need GTK+ version 2.2.x and Python 2.3. The latest release accommodates name changes in the gnomeapplet module.
Overall, VaryOnApplet is an intuitive and user-friendly applet that simplifies process control for Gnome. Its flexibility and ease of use make it suitable for a wide range of users, regardless of their technical skills.
