VBinDiff is a software tool that allows users to view files in ASCII and hexadecimal (or EBCDIC) formats. It enables efficient binary file comparisons and provides visual representations of differences between two files.
The inspiration behind the development of VBinDiff came from the Compare Files feature of the ProSel utilities by Glen Bredon designed for the Apple II. When the developers couldn't find an equivalent utility for the PC, they decided to create it themselves. The software also features a single-file mode inspired by the LIST utility of 4DOS and friends.
Whilst the less utility provides an excellent line-oriented display, it falls short when it comes to hex display, which is one of the standout features of LIST. VBinDiff fills this gap by providing a fast and efficient method to view the hex display of files.
It's important to note that VBinDiff requires ncurses to operate. With this new release, the developers have fixed a major bug in the Win32 hex editor that caused it to crash after saving changes. Additionally, they have added the --enable-debug configure option and clarified licensing.
As a developer, the creators of VBinDiff are open to hearing from users of the software. If you find the software useful or have any feedback, reach out and let them know.
