The WAVE Utilities software package includes three tools built to manage audio files in WAVE format.
The first program in the package, "SimplifyWave," is designed to make complex WAVE files easier to parse by removing extraneous chunks like playlists, cue lists, and padding. By doing this, the program converts the complex file into a simpler, more standard-conforming format, leaving only the format chunk and the first data chunk intact. Any chunks that are removed during this process are reported through messages.
The second program, "RepairWave," can help you fix non-conformant files that are pretending to be WAVE files. These files may have a WAVE header, but they lack the required data chunk id and size information. RepairWave inserts the missing data chunk identifier and size information and updates the WAVE chunk size information in the header to match.
Finally, "InfoWave" is a tool that lets you extract information from RIFF/WAV or RIFX/WAV files and displays detailed information about their contents, including the size, type, and location of each chunk, along with the encoding of the audio data, its sampling rate, resolution, number of channels, and other key information. The program produces a clear output, which shows information such as RIFF identifier, chunk size, encoded format, and data rates.
These programs were previously known as SimplifyWav, wavrepair, and wavinfo, respectively. The newest update has fixed several bugs that may have affected performance in specific cases. Overall, the WAVE Utilities package can be a handy set of tools for anyone dealing with WAVE format audio files, whether you need to extract information or modify the files themselves.
