Webmontage is a newly developed software that draws its inspiration from WebCollage. It offers a comprehensive range of features and functionalities that make it an ideal choice for users who want an efficient and user-friendly tool for creating web collages.
So, what exactly does Webmontage do? This software allows users to extract images from the internet to be used in various ways. At the moment, it can create an ever-changing image with pictures that are linked and annotated with the search term, and it can also change the desktop background. However, just like WebCollage, it may be illegal to use in some countries since the program cannot distinguish between copyrighted or free-to-use imagery. As a user, you must contemplate how you plan to utilize the program's output.
Despite this, there are various ways on how you can use Webmontage. You may consider producing wallpaper archives, creating clipart archives, or even researching and detecting certain imagery. However, when it comes to producing wallpapers, using Webmontage to find them on the internet and optionally framing and displaying them on your desktop is only a spinoff. In my opinion, the much more interesting feature of Webmontage is the random image montage generation. This feature enables the software to find images of your choice by defining a search item list and then randomly placing them on a canvas defined by you. It also generates an image map that makes it possible to click on the canvas to see where the original picture came from. The program also annotates the search term used.
So, where's the fun in using Webmontage? The program comes with some examples on how to use it, but one of the most enjoyable things about it is creating search term lists. For example, there is a list in the program archive that is built to create a random canvas with the TV series "Lost" as the topic. You can create your own lists and exchange them with your friends. It's a challenge to see who can come up with the best search terms to avoid off-topic images.
To use Webmontage, you need PHP5 with its basic modules: Curl (to retrieve urls and images) and GD (to handle the images). If you know how to use PHP5, then you shouldn't have a problem using Webmontage. However, if you're not familiar with it, the two examples, randpic.php, and rndwallpaper.php, can help you get started. The former should be able to run out of the box, while the latter may need some editing of the command line, especially when you're using Bill Gates' malware.
