The ZoneCD is a LiveCD software that serves as a WiFi gateway. It efficiently manages internet access and security within a network.
With automatic hardware detection, Public IP ZoneCD supports graphics cards, sound cards, and other peripherals, making it an ideal mini operating system for WiFi end-user authentication and web content filtering. The distribution of the software is under the GNU General Public License, making it easily accessible to users.
Despite being based on Linux, you don't need any prior knowledge of Linux to use the ZoneCD. Just place the CD in your CD-ROM and turn on your computer. The auto configuration software used during bootup is provided by Knoppix, while Morphix offers a modular platform for adding components and software to create an automatic WiFi gateway.
Thanks to the open-source ideal, Public IP ZoneCD is easy to share, and the code can easily be picked up by developers to take the software in a new direction.
The ZoneCD operates by adding a piece of hardware between your AP and your network or internet connection. As long as the PC meets the system requirements of having a minimum of 128MB RAM, two ethernet cards, a floppy drive, and a CD-ROM, the system can be run headless. After the initial setup and configuration, the CD will boot completely unattended.
The ZoneCD features two crucial services, NoCat, and Dansgaurdian, that allow it to function as a self-contained WiFi gateway. Depending on the mode in which you configure your ZoneCD to operate, various features will be available. The ZoneCD can operate in Open or Closed mode, with many of the Closed mode features only available on the Control server in Zone Control.
For Open mode, the key features include homepage redirection, customization of the ZoneCD splash page, content filtering to block porn, downloads, etc., and customization of firewall rules. For Closed mode, the features include user authentication/registration, homepage redirection, bandwidth shaping, daily time limits, daily download limits, zone open and close times, block by MAC address, configure end-user network permissions (Classes), customization of firewall rules for each class, content filtering to block porn, downloads, etc., daily log mailer program, block traffic to wired network, customization of ZoneCD login pages, branded "Terms of Use" template, or use of your own, usage statistics, multilingual login pages (Dutch, French, German, Spanish, English), and end-user reporting.
