FreeVikings is a software that replicates the classic DOS game Lost Vikings.
What's interesting about FreeVikings is that it was created out of the desire of the developer to play the game on their favourite OS. The game is a commercial product, and the manufacturers didn't intend to make it free. However, the developer was determined to play the game on their favourite operating system, so they started creating the game from scratch using Ruby.
To get FreeVikings running, you'll need to have Ruby installed, as well as the SDL library and its extensions, SDL_image, SDL_gfx, and SDL_TTF. You'll also need certain extensions for Ruby, namely RUDL (version equal or higher than 0.7), REXML, Log4r, and script. You can find all of these in the Ruby application archive or RAA, and some may be included in your Ruby distribution.
Overall, FreeVikings is an impressive game that delivers on its promise of being playable on Linux without a DOS emulator. It's great to see game developers take matters into their own hands to create the games they want to play. If you're a fan of Lost Vikings, then you'll definitely want to check out FreeVikings.
