KIconDialog++ is an upgraded KDE software that enhances the icon dialog experience.
However, if you want to build it, you need to manually edit the Makefile since it is not autotooled yet. Please refer to the README and BUGS files for more information.
The latest release has some significant changes. First, some initial GUI annoyances have been fixed. Secondly, non-system icons that are larger than the requested size are now scaled down. Thirdly, lockUser and lockcustomDir parameters have been modified and renamed to lockContext and lockBrowse, respectively, to improve their descriptiveness. Additionally, KIconButton now supports all KIconDialog's options, especially customDir, lockContext, and lockBrowse.
To test its full capabilities, you can try using KIconTester, which is a full-featured testbed. Overall, KIconDialog++ is a prototype software that is meant to be run directly, and its features will make your desktop experience better.
