LPRng is a software that enhances printer spooling, allowing for better management of print jobs.
The source code for LPRng compiles and runs on a wide range of UNIX systems compatible with other print spoolers, and network printers that use the LPR interface and meet RFC1179 requirements. LPRng also provides emulation packages for the SVR4 lp and lpstat programs compatible with vintage printing systems that can be customized to support local requirements.
LPRng supports various secure and authenticated printing scenarios, including Kerberos V, MIT Kerberos IV Print Support, and PGP authentication, making it ideal for use in environments that require secure printing support. The software is being adopted by MIT for use as their Campus Wide printing support system. Additional authentication support can easily be added.
LPRng is an Open Source software distributed under the GPL or Artistic license. AStArt Technologies provides commercial support, enhancements, and licensing for users who do not want to use the terms of the above licenses. AStArt also offers network and system consulting services for UNIX and NT systems, as well as real-time and network software.
Finally, LPRng is Y2K compliant, with no known data dependencies. Dates generated use values relative to the UNIX Epoch and will remain consistent up to 2034 conservatively. The updated Vietnamese and Polish PO files and added Vietnamese PO file are the standout features of its release update.
