Max clone is an action-packed game that combines mecha-style combat and exploration. Players navigate their customizable battle vehicles through a variety of environments, engaging in fast-paced battles and uncovering hidden secrets along the way.
Previously, several members of the MaxTheGame.de community worked on similar projects to introduce network games using TCP/IP. However, only IPX was supported. Sadly, even in the latest version 1.04, there were serious multiplayer bugs that were never fixed by Interplay, making it almost impossible to play the game.
After trying different ways to resolve these issues, MM released the most playable MAX clone for WinOS using the famous SDL libs. Nevertheless, he made only a few patches and stopped development due to lack of time. However, he left the source code available for the community, which was then picked up by Albert Ziegenhagel, aka alzi.
This is when the community decided to go opensource with the project. Many gamers on the bbs knew programming, and some were skilled in 2D and 3D arts. They set up a development server running Lunar Linux, and various team software was installed, including subversion and trac. After removing any Windows-API, the game could be built (compiled) on any POSIX compatible operating system supported by SDL libs. Thus, M.A.X. Reloaded was born.
To start playing, you need to use the resinstaller to copy the original game data to the data folder of maxr. If maxr fails to start, the maxr.log file is an excellent place to start. It is important to note that the unofficial package is no longer supported, and players should buy or download a full version of the original game. Alternatively, they can wait until the free fgx package is entirely done.
To personalize the settings of the game, players can go to max.xml, where they can set preferences such as language, resolution, and fullscreen. However, higher resolutions are not fully supported yet, and players might experience strange graphics errors during the game. For English language, set "ENG," and for fullscreen, set "No Windowmode."
The developers of this project are Bernd Kosmahl, Eiko Oltmanns, Albert Ziegenhagel, and Paul Grathwohl. Overall, M.A.X. Reloaded is an exceptional game, and its community-driven development and OpenSource ethos make it a perfect choice for all gaming enthusiasts.
