PanelFM streamlines file and directory navigation across your local drive. With its emphasis on speed, easily browse through your files without delay.
The default entry in the popup menu when you click on the PanelFM applet is your home directory. Hovering over your home directory will pop up a submenu with a complete list of all files and directories in that location, and so on. Additionally, each submenu that pops up for a directory has two menu items at the top that enable you to open the directory in the default file manager or gnome-terminal (gnome-terminal and Nautilus).
You can add extra root points in the main menu by creating a .panelfmrc file in your home directory. This file should contain a full pathname for each root point, with standard UNIX permissions that apply. You will only be able to browse directories for which you have adequate permissions.
PanelFM was inspired by File Menu Applet (), which is no longer available. The most recent release of PanelFM introduces several new features, including the display of icons in each menu item based on file or directory mime type, an applet icon in the About box, a tooltip, a move of the applet icon to the "Utilities" section of GNOME "Add to Panel" dialog, and general code cleanup.
Overall, PanelFM is a useful tool for quickly finding and opening your files and directories. It is easy to use and has a range of helpful features that can complement your current file manager.
