The rlpr software facilitates remote printing to a local printer, simplifying the process and ensuring print jobs are completed efficiently.
Despite not being a complete replacement for BSD lpr, the rlpr package offers many benefits. You will still require `lptest', `lpc', and `lpd' for now, but you no longer need to run `lpd' locally to print to a remote printer. You can, however, replace `lpr', `lpq', and `lprm' with the backward compatible and GPL'd rlpr versions of these commands.
The rlpr versions of these commands are implemented using clean-room techniques and contain no proprietary source code. While the primary goal of the rlpr project was to produce simple and reliable remote printing software, the developer may consider developing `lpd', `lptest', and `lpc' in the future. This will require significant work as most of the printing subsystem's real work is done by `lpd'.
The rlpr source code is highly portable, and the software has been successfully patched to work in non-Unix POSIX.1 environments, such as MVS. However, the operating system's features and the development tools determine whether rlpr will build and operate correctly on a particular system.
The latest release of the rlpr software fixed several autoconf-related problems introduced in the previous version. Additionally, the update added support fallback to syslog() when vsyslog() is not available.
