This software provides a standardized system for gathering data from Linux-based systems. It streamlines the process of collecting information and allows for easy analysis and management of data.
Why is SBLIM needed? The current state of Systems Management and Manageability for GNU/Linux systems and others is rather fragmented and incoherent. This is due to proprietary formats and unique locations for system resource information, with files spread across multiple directories and filesystems. There is also a lack of common concepts, making it difficult for Systems Management applications to manage system resources without knowing implementation details.
Solutions exist for certain problem areas, such as configuring printers and administering users, but they do not address the conceptual ramifications. SBLIM seeks to provide a solution by implementing the CIM Schema and enabling GNU/Linux for WBEM management.
SBLIM is built upon the foundations laid by the DMTF with WBEM, CIM, and the CIM Schema. CIM is a conceptual framework that includes an object-oriented meta-model for describing system components and their relationships in a network/enterprise environment, along with a comprehensive set of classes and objects for modeling system resources.
WBEM enables access and modification of system resources via the CIM Operations over HTTP protocol, which is a part of the WBEM initiative. Open source CIMOMs are available that use provider interfaces to access and map system resources to the CIM object world. The code written to the provider interfaces is referred to as instrumentation code and can be thought of as being similar to a device driver. SBLIM implements the CIM Schema (and any necessary extensions) to enable GNU/Linux for WBEM management.
Joining the SBLIM project as a developer, documenter, or tester is a great way to support this effort towards improving the manageability of GNU/Linux systems. The CIM Schema is vast, making it clear that this is a challenging but important direction to pursue.
