StormWar is a 3D real-time strategy game that draws inspiration from the classic game NetStorm, Islands at War. With its stunning 3D graphics and engaging gameplay, players can enjoy strategic battles that will test their skills and tactics in a whole new way.
Unlike many other game engine projects, StormWar won't be too general, making it accessible to developers and players alike. Though some limitations will be eventually removed in the future, the goal remains to keep it easy for modders.
A mod contains all the required data used by the engine stored in versatile data files based on variables. Modifying or creating one is straightforward since it doesn't require an integrated scripting language. The StormWar official release includes the StormWar engine written in C, the 'default' mod, and possibly other interesting or testing mods.
The game will feature playing against bots controlled by the computer or human opponents over a network. The games are automatically generated, and players can participate in tournaments to learn new knowledge.
Key features of StormWar include a quite portable source code written in C and numerous debugging options for developers and mod makers. The game engine has mods support based on files, powerful variable systems, an in-game shell with runtime functions, and virtual modules with shell functions, preferences, and shared resources.
The graphical engine features OpenGL rendering, 3D objects with animated keyframes, 2D on-screen objects, graphical user interface management, bitmap font rendering, and basic 3D texturing with bilinear, mip-mapped, and trilinear texture filterings. It also has lighting, simple materials, fast motion blur emulation, fog, gamma correction, and manual camera positioning (scrolling, rotation around a point, and panning).
The game user interface has a widget tree, a menubar and menus, a game panel, a graphical shell, and dialogs. Additionally, the sound engine supports music with stereo sound samples mixing and 3-dimensional sound positioning.
The predefined environmental effects include cubic skybox, cloud layers, flocking (to simulate birds, for example), lightnings with thunder sound, and fog. The requirements for the game are the SDL library, version 1.2.x, SDL_image library, version 1.2.x, OpenGL library, version 1.4 (not tested below), OpenGL's GLU library, version 1.x, and SDL_mixer library, version 1.2.x.
The new StormWar release features a rewritten graphical engine to allow for easier upgrades, featuring 2D effects, 3D transparency, and a better animation system. The keyboard and mouse management are changed to offer better gameplay. Additionally, two new units (sun cannon and workshop) were added, and the temple was updated. There are also added Portuguese and Polish translations. Currently, the game is not playable, but it is something to keep an eye on in the future.
