Tape2mp3 is a software package to convert tapes to mp3s, comprised of several programs that work together for an efficient conversion process.
To use tape2mp3, you will need to record the wav file of your tape or whatever audio source you wish to record. With the wavtools package installed, simply use record.sh, give it a filename for the output file, and specify the length of your tape so that it knows when to stop. If you overestimate, it is okay to hit ctrl-c.
Next, run tape2mp3.pl with the "-f file" option. You should be aware that the script will overwrite anything called [0-9]+.wav, so be cautious.
With trackscan, tape2mp3 scans for moments of silence in a wav file. These silences must last for a couple of seconds to be recognized, but you can change this in the trackscan source. Additionally, the volume threshold for silence is also modifiable in the program's source. Trackscan then outputs the start and end markers (in seconds) of tracks, which are parsed by process.pl. This in turn calls wavcut to split the file into pieces. The software also checks the length of the tracks and will discard anything shorter than a certain size (10 seconds at the moment).
Overall, tape2mp3 is a powerful software solution for converting tapes to mp3s, but it requires a lot of disk space and the libsndfile library. However, it is well worth the effort for anyone looking to preserve their audio recordings in a digital format.
