Tcltexed is a basic text editor which uses the scripting language Tcl/Tk.
One of the key benefits of Tcltexed is that it includes all the functions that a standard text editor provides, such as editing texts, copy and paste, and searching and replacing.
In addition, the program's command shortcuts are modelled using both Motif style, as well as the style known from DOS programmes such as edit and Borland Pascal, or joe under UNIX. This extends its functionality and improves the user experience.
Tcltexed also comes with additional features that cater to LaTeX users in particular. Users can start external programmes latex, xdvi, dvips, and ghostview simply by clicking the respective button. Furthermore, the software automatically shows the output created by these programs.
Another useful feature of Tcltexed is Syntax Highlighting. It differentiates between known and unknown LaTeX commands, and it allows users to insert standard LaTeX commands by clicking on a button. Mathematical symbols are also shown as small icons for easy insertion.
Users of Tcltexed can define their frequently used LaTeX command sequences and assign them to individual buttons. When typing LaTeX commands directly, the software completes the command automatically as soon as there is only one option left. It also pairs open brackets with corresponding closed brackets immediately (although this feature can be turned off). When an environment is introduced into the document by begin{xxx}, this entry will be closed by end{xxx} right away.
Finally, Tcltexed includes a reference list of LaTeX commands known to the software, providing an additional support to users.
To run Tcltexed, users need to have Tcl/Tk version 8.4 or above installed. The program's latest release added support for tcl/tk 8.4. Overall, Tcltexed is an excellent text editor for those who use LaTeX heavily and would benefit from its range of features.
